[ As the sun rises at the start of the month, a forest of colorful tents arises outside the city gates. It is not an enemy encampment, though, unless you hate fun. Then yes, it is an enemy encampment. Fun is assaulting the Kingdom in full force, as Harvest Faire fever sweeps across the nation. ]

[ You may join crowds of eager people on the initial days, or wait until the mania has died down to a more casual flow—but either way, there’s a lot to see and do at the faire. It all has to do with people trying to sell you on their religions by showing you their October Best in holidays, but the people of the Kingdom know that if they’re boring or too hard with their sales, no one will come back. So expect a fun, full immersion experience into this or that cult! Food, beverage, and substances will be provided, along with any props you may need to participate. ]

[ Or, I guess, find opportunities to get paid to be a carny, if money is more your speed than fun. ]

[ Cults are on a rotating schedule, so they won’t be the same every day, but eager acolytes will be glad to tell you when they’ll be back in the tent again, so you’ll be welcome to come back again. Maybe even bring a friend along with you? They’re often all smiles on the advertising side, no matter how macabre or dark their faith may be. ]

[ And hey, look, on some days, there’s empty tents... ]

[Oh, hey, who's in this tent here? Looks like a handful of hapless-looking men and women dressed in loose, flowing robes (which, upon closer examination, look an awful lot like strategically-tied blankets), as well as... Oh Jesus fuck no it's that obnoxious asshole with the green hair again. He gets to sit in a comfy chair with nice fluffy pillows on the seat. All the other poor locals have to stand, even though there appear to be plenty more pillows lying around on the floor.

You may come in just as one of the robed people is monotonically reading from a scroll for what is clearly not the first time that day:]

Legend tells of a mystical, distant land where, once every year, one champion is chosen by the gods of harvest, and others are encouraged to pay tribute to them in return for blessings of fertility and plenty...

[And if any listeners seem particularly skeptical, Kaphlar goes on to explain:]

Well, sure, I'm standing in for the champion here, but obviously, I'm only holding the position since I started this little tent here! It's perfectly reasonable and within the spirit of the festivities to hold competitions of wit, cunning and strength to choose a proper champion. What do you say?

[Pay no mind to the mirrors laid out here and there or to the blanket-covered crates that almost certainly aren't concealing ways for him to ensure he always comes out on top.]

[Egon is interested in learning about the other cultures of this land he has now simply accepted being trapped in. Of course when Kaph sets one up-]

[Clearly he's back on the bullshit he never actually left. Egon doesn't care much for what any other observers are going to think, pushing past the crowd to poke Kaph in the chest firmly.]

[Whoa, rude. It's ESPECIALLY rude that none of these people working with him even tried to stop Egon. Kaph's gonna need to have a talk with them later, clearly.]

[Egon has, at times, been responsible for some manipulation all-in-fun. Mostly, it was to get someone rich to drop charges for damage done while containing the ghosts. This, this was just a bit despicable.]

I never called it a religion! [He raises his hands defensively in a theatrical gesture.] It's a simple harvest festival, it's part of my culture, and I'd appreciate it if you respected it.

What is the context of this festival? Where did this come from?

What do I look like, a historian? [He yawns.] Do you know just how long ago people started telling stories to each other to pass the time?

Can you at least give me the name of this history? It seems to benefit you, and no one else, quite a bit.

Yeah, sure, whatever. It's the Legend of the Harvest Champion. I don't know what you're planning to do with that information, though! No internet here, and even if there was, I doubt it would cross universes.

[SHRUGS.] So have fun unfairly persecuting me, I guess!

[She walks in. Sees Kaphlar. Very nearly walks straight out again.]

[On the other hand, this could be an opportunity to kick his ass again, and she's struggling not to want that.]

It's tempting to just ignore Éowyn - why, he can barely muster the effort to come up with an excuse to kick her out - but... he can't, in good conscience, pass up a chance to teach her a lesson.]

And if that answered my question, I would not have asked it. What are the tests? [It's amazing how loud the "fool" on the end of that sentence can be, when she didn't actually say it.]

Oh, oh, oh - [He wags a finger, a devious grin spreading across his face.] Are you asking because you're interested in taking up the challenge? Because in that case, I'll tell you, no problem! Buuut challenges are binding and non-refundable.

[She narrows her eyes.]

Then you would charge for the privilege?

A nominal fee! Just a tiny little donation of one gold coin.

And for what gain? To sit in a high chair and make mockery of others, as you do?

[Yeah, she's still very tempted. Just to wipe the smug look off your face has got to be worth one coin, right?]

Why would I need any "gain", as you put it? [He laughs. It could be mistaken for good-natured if it weren't for the amused glint in his eyes.] I'm just taking part in the festivities and sharing a piece of my own culture, that's all.

Wow. [He brings a hand to his chest in mock offense.] I can't believe someone of your stature would make such a simple mistake in rhetorics! Don't you know you're not supposed to attack your opponent?
